YOUR TUBE AWARD
“Comes Alive”!

International Aluminium Tube Design Award 2013/2014

The aluminium tube is the premium choice for packing semi-solid products such as creams and ointments in an attractive way. At the same time, however, the aluminium tube poses one of the greatest challenges within the packaging industry in terms of product and graphics design. After the success of last year’s 1. International Aluminum Tube Design Award 2012, this year’s YOUR TUBE AWARD “Comes Alive”! wants to invite all interested product and graphic designers to take up the challenge.

The YOUR TUBE AWARD 2014 has been assigned €10,000 in prize-money. The TOP FIVE SHORTLIST of the best designs for 2014 was presented live before an audience of specialists in the field at Interpack 2014 in Düsseldorf (Germany), the world’s biggest packaging-industry trade fair. Please go to the WINNERS 2014 section to see images of the winning designs. The following pages contain further information on the competition.

The YOUR TUBE AWARD
International Aluminium Tube Design Award

The YOUR TUBE AWARD – the why and wherefore?

The aluminium tube is the premium choice for packing semi-solid products such as creams and ointments in an attractive way. This is not least due to the excellent characteristics of aluminium when it’s used as a packaging material. Although its functional advantages are beyond dispute in the branch, many designers shy away from using this premium packaging material, due to the simple fact that it is poses a number of challenges from the aspect of graphics and product design. In a scheme intended to attract both budding designers and experienced experts who haven’t yet worked with the aluminium tube to experiment with this unique material, the European Tube Manufacturers Association (etma) is once again sponsoring the international design competition for graphics and product designers.

The YOUR TUBE AWARD – the who and what?

With the YOUR TUBE AWARD the sponsor of the design competition - the European Tube Manufacturers Association (etma) - wishes to show its appreciation of the creative combination of material and design regarding the aluminium tube. The International Aluminium Tube Design Award will be awarded in recognition of outstanding concepts for the aluminium tube in the areas of graphics and product design. Holistic concepts – for example, for fictional brands – will be just as welcome as creative graphic ideas or out-of-the-ordinary product designs. The competition hence sets no limits to creativity: we’re looking for an innovative staging of the base material aluminium in the shape of a tube.

The YOUR TUBE AWARD – the prizes?

The International Aluminium Tube Design Award includes the following prizes:

1st prize: € 5,000
2nd prize: € 2,000
3rd prize: € 1,000

Special prize for “Best holistic concept”: € 2,000

The jury will determine a top-five shortlist out of all designs. These nominees get a chance to deliver a brilliant performance on the international stage of the Interpack 2014 in Düsseldorf, Germany, the world’s biggest packaging trade fair, and will be awarded live in a special event ceremony. For this purpose, the YOUR TUBE AWARD competition office will contact the Top Five nominees in March 2014.

The YOUR TUBE AWARD – the how and where?

Both individual persons as well as classes of design colleges, academies, or comparable institutes are eligible for participation in the YOUR TUBE AWARD. The online registration form on the next page must be filled out to register for participation. The submissions for the competition can be sent in by post or also in digital format.

The YOUR TUBE AWARD – Anything else I need to know?

The YOUR TUBE AWARD – Anything else I need to know? In the following section “Material” we’ve included additional information on the use of the aluminium tube as a packaging material. This is where you can find, for example, key arguments in favour of the use of aluminium tubes: In addition to a broad spectrum of applications, these arguments include the aspects of hygiene, product protection, convenience, and recyclability – all benefits resulting from the excellent properties of the material aluminium. On top of this, no other packaging material offers the unique look and feel of the aluminium tube. The “Material” section also gives details on the production process and the printing methods that are used for aluminium tubes, and includes templates for conventional graphic design programmes. You don’t have to use these tips and details in your design work, they are merely intended as guidance.
