During the tree planting ceremony @mkwc_ke , I had the privilege of learning more about their Mountain Bongo Breeding Programme – a vital initiative to safeguard the rare and endangered Mountain Bongo species from the brink of extinction.

This remarkable effort, strongly championed by our committed conservationist friend @humphrey.kariuki.ndegwa , is not just about preserving a species, it’s about restoring balance to delicate ecosystems.

These animals, iconic symbols of our natural heritage, face the imminent threats of habitat loss, poaching, and climate change.

Over the past decade, irresponsible logging has obliterated over 20% of Bongo habitats in the Mount Kenya region alone.

The trees we planted during the ceremony are a promise for the future, expanding the Mountain Bongo’s habitat and contributing to the restoration of their ancestral homes.

Inspired by the cause, some of our partners have stepped up following out visit to sponsor unborn Mountain Bongos, offering lifelong support to these magnificent creatures.

I’m delighted to share that since our visit, a healthy female Bongo named Yvette has been born, marking a tangible impact from our collective efforts.

This journey underscores the power each of us holds to make a difference in conservation.

I’m proud that @B Capital has the opportunity to participate in such initiatives, ensuring a thriving future for endangered species and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Reflecting on a few of last year’s proudest mome

Reflecting on a few of last year’s proudest moments as the first month of the new year draws to a close.

Without doubt, one of the highlights of 2023 was my participation in the @mountkenyawildlifeconservancy tree planting initiative, graciously hosted by our friend and passionate conservationist @humphrey.kariuki.ndegwa
Alongside a number of close clients and partners, I had the privilege of a hands-on experience planting saplings native to the @kanyoni region, as part of a ceremony launching the conservancy’s latest drive to plant 4,500 trees.

This inspirational drive has been made possible by both Prague Zoo, who gifted the initial 1,500 trees, and Humphrey, who generously matched that contribution.

This latest initiative builds upon previous successes, where the Conservancy collaborated with local communities to restore degraded areas within Mount Kenya’s forests.

Over 35,000 indigenous trees (specifically the Greenheart Tree, known for its medicinal value and quality timber), were planted by 3,000 community members in this reforestation program.

Proudly aligned with Kenya’s vision, Mount Kenya Conservancy, supported by Humphrey and @JanusContinentalGroup, is committed to their goal of planting 15 billion trees over ten years. Every sapling planted is a step towards a greener, healthier planet.

It was an absolute honour to be part of a mission that is continually working towards a greener more sustainable world.

I look forward to seeing the opportunities 2024 brings for @BCapital to continue to make positive impacts with our partners.

In 2024, businesses, especially financial institutions, face heightened risk due to their interconnected nature and reliance on third-party technology.

Recent incidents highlight the growing menace. In the last quarter of 2023:

A major bank’s US trading arm was hit by ransomware causing global trading to be settled using a USB stick and a courier.

A major financial data and trading group was prevented from trading and was ransomed before being able to resume services.

A giant mortgage servicing firm lost 14.7m users’ personal info and shut down systems after an external hack.

The scale of these attacks shows the damage that can be done, and billions of dollars of losses will be reported this year. We will revisit this topic in the summer to see how these statistics have changed within a six-month period.

The weakest link to target is always a person. The criminals just have to ask you for help, and it is big business.

Here are Toro’s 4 top tips that will help reduce the risk of a security breach.

· Master the Art of Passwords - Choose three random words which aren’t easily associated with you, avoid personal information, and use a unique combination for each account. This approach makes it easy to remember, and difficult for others to guess and ensures that if one account is compromised, the rest remain secure.

· Regularly Update Your Devices - Major software providers release critical updates on a regular schedule. Enable automatic updates whenever possible and restart your devices regularly to apply these updates. Be cautious when charging your devices and ensure they’re not easily accessible to others.

· Pause, Even When Busy – Cyber criminals rely on our haste to make mistakes. Verify the sender’s authenticity, watch for red flags, and think twice before clicking on links or downloading attachments.

· Safely Connect With a VPN - Use a VPN to protect your online privacy and security when using untrusted Wi-Fi. A VPN creates a secure tunnel for your internet traffic, making it harder for prying eyes to access your online activities.

As we continually remind our clients, in today’s digital age, good cyber security is critical. By following the tips above, you can significantly enhance your online security.
