    Philips DayLightGuide Daytime Running Light

I had my eyes on the Low profile Philips DRL with 8 LED but didn't get a chance to pull the trigger because I has the off-brand dual-duty DRL-Turn signal installed last year on my Prius V package 5. The off-brand worked fine until I ran into the flash flood which came up over the hood! The next day one of the light had water inside, which I then replaced but a year later the plastic lens became cloudy.

Since then I looked around and found that the Philips DRL will fit and they have either 4 or 8 LED version. The winter is around the corner, so I looked it up and found the new version called LED Philips DayLightGuide Daytime Running Light which has the band of light at 6 watt.

Below is the 8 LED old version.

With the 12 inch ramps setup, I removed the front guard cover and worked my way up to the fuse box as pictured.

I decided not to use the bracket for several reasons: I read somewhere that once this DRL get locked inside the bracket, it is almost impossible to remove! It is a tight fit, so I don't have to drill the holes on the grill for the brackets and I used the high temp silicone glue instead. I installed the light flush so that the heat sink in the rear get exposed as much as possible. Finally if minor accident like it get hit, the light will just be pushed back, no major damages like broken grill or brackets.

This is where I snaked the wires through.

The instruction shows 2 different wiring diagrams, one of which for regular car and the other for hybrid which they called the start-stop action.

    Different angle.

[IMG]You have to connect 3 wires: RED = positive terminal which I took from the top of the fuse box as seen in picture; the BLACK = ground which I used the bracket bolt above the top left of the fuse box; BLUE = ignition on which is the 10 amp bottom right fuse that I piggy back off. The optional ORANGE = head light that I tapped off the small driving light which if turned on the DRL will dim as per clip enclosed. The whole job was under 1 hour. The light is very bright.

You can see that when I turn on the head light either low or high, the DRL will dim.

Below is (was) my old Dual duty DRL:

I bought the DayLightGuide last week and then I found no US seller yet. $bay has a few from Europe and Russia!

Inside the package, Philips includes what seem to be a pair of T10 load resistors, which I did NOT use because I can't figure out where they should go.

    Looks good. (y)

Perhaps those T10 load resistors are meant to replace bulbs that are normally in the parking/marker lights?

With the DRLs on reduced power, theoretically you don't need the marker lights in the headlight housing. Replacing them with those devices will preserve the circuit resistance so there are no errors with canbus systems.

Oh yes, the "canbus error", I was thinking only the fast flashing turn signal with LED light. The manual didn't mention anything! Apparently the Prius V doesn't have the canbus error warning when low resistant LED bulb is used in place of the regular high resistant filament ones. In fact, I replaced my rear turning bulb to the COB led and when I switch the turning signal on, it will flash with correct interval for about 6-7 times, then quick flash once and repeat this cycle. At first, I wanted to leave it like that because it will remind me better if I left the turn signal on when I the turn isn't 90 degree and the turning arm won't kick back but later it annoyed me more so much so that I added the load resisters. :)
Note also that all my interior lights are LED now plus the front stock DRL was changed to LED too as seen below:
