Smithsonian’s traveling “Voices and Votes” Exhibit in Sackets Harbor

-

Union Hotel Building, West Main Street. Free Admission. Open Mondays through Fridays from 10am to 3pm, Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. The exhibit is closed Sundays.

“Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” is presented by the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street project in cooperation with the Museum Association of New York. It examines the nearly 250-year-old American experiment of a government “of, by and for the people,” and how each generation since continues to question how to form “a more perfect union.”

The Museum Association selected Sackets Harbor as the second venue in the state to host the exhibition, which is traveling the country.

“Voices and Votes” is based on a major exhibition that had been on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. The Museum on Main Street adaptation has many of the same dynamic features: historical and contemporary photos, educational and archival video, multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photographs and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia and protest material.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America is presented by the Smithsonian Institution Museum on Main Street in cooperation with the Museum Association of New York (MANY), the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, and Hay Memorial Library.

The Bacon Brothers

-

Bound by blood and a mutual love of American roots music, The Bacon Brothers have spent the past quarter-century in a creative whirl, funneling their shared DNA into a genre-bending sound. They call that sound “Forosoco” – a blend of folk, rock, soul and country influences, delivered by two songwriters who were born to collaborate – and it’s taken the siblings across the world, from shows in Japan to performances at American landmarks like Carnagie Hall and the Grand Ole Opry.

The Bacon Brothers turn a new page with their eleventh release, Erato, whose five songs showcase the duo at their diverse peak. It’s an EP of dynamic contrasts: quiet moments and big payoffs, organic instrumentation and electronic textures, self-penned songs and high-profile collaborations. For Michael and Kevin Bacon, it’s also the continuation of a story that began long ago in Philadelphia, where the two siblings were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters, Philly soul singers and classic rock bands.

They garnered the award for Valley Star Family Vocal Group of the Year while Melody Williamson was recognized as the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Vocalist of the Year in 2020. Fran Lebowitz: A State of the Union Conversation

-

In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators.

Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker.

She can also be seen in various documentary films including the American Experience series on New York City, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016), Regarding Susan Sontag (2014), and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990), among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled Public Speaking. A limited documentary series, Pretend It’s a City, also directed by Martin Scorsese, premiered on Netflix in 2021, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021 she was given the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee – an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA.

Clayton Community Band Performance

-

Our band is made up of members that come from all over the North Country. Although many live in Clayton, Watertown or surrounding communities in Jefferson County, some of our musicians travel from St. Lawrence and Lewis Counties. We have a few members from even farther away who spend summers in the Clayton area and we welcome them back to play with us each summer season. We also come from many different walks of life. Some of our performers are life-long musicians either as performers or educators in local schools, some are professionals in other areas, and some have retired from their careers and are just looking for a fun and relaxing way to get involved in the community. Despite our differences we all come together each week to rehearse the music that we love sharing with our dedicated audiences. All members are listed in the programs for each of our concerts.

Tickets are $8 & $6 (Balcony Center & everywhere else)

River Santa Festival – Alexandria Bay

Join us for our Inaugural River Santa Festival!

There will be activities all day long including wagon rides!

Stick around for a special visit from Santa Claus!!

1000 Islands River Santa will take place December 14, 2024, from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Upper James Street in Alexandria Bay!
Every child deserves to believe in Santa and to have a real Christmas. Our goal this year is to reach out to every child along the river and/or every child in need from anywhere in Northern New York. When Santa arrives at the village dock in Alexandria Bay by boat with a United States Coast Guard escort, he will be bringing gifts purchased with your donations and sponsorship. This committee is 100% volunteers and every dollar raised will go directly toward the purchase of gifts and the Backpack Program.
This money fed so many children in need through this wonderful program and the schools were beyond grateful for this additional help. This year with your help, we hope to put gifts in the hands of all the children again and to hopefully continue feeding as many children in need as possible through the Backpack Programs. We are also going to donate to three non-profit organizations in the area with the extra donation.
Take a look at the video of the link listed below and you will get an idea of what we accomplished in just four days the first year. This year will again be a festival with food and drink and music on a closed Upper James Street. Hay wagon rides will be offered as well. Many merchants will be open for shopping and eating.
