Welcome to Chef To Be, Calgary’s most thrilling blackbox cooking competition where the head chefs of six well known Calgary restaurants team up with their ambitious pupils to compete and raise money for a $5,000 SAIT Culinary Scholarship.

CALGARY’S FOOD SCENE IS THRIVING AND WE’RE HELPING ONE SPECIAL STUDENT GET AHEAD ON THEIR PATH THROUGH CULINARY SCHOOL.

6 SECRET INGREDIENTS. 6 TEAMS. 4 HOURS… 300 TASTING MEALS TO SERVE.

The blackbox competition means that students and their associated head chefs will get six specifically chosen ingredients to prepare for an audience of 130 with no prior preparation.

Each competing Chef is responsible for creating their brigade of Four Members. The brigade must consist of The Competing Chef, (1) SAIT Alumni, (1) current SAIT PCK or ACKP student and a fourth member of the Chef’s choice. The Chef is responsible for putting their teams together.

There are other fundraisers, other cooking competitions and the Food Network, but Calgary’s Chef To Be competition is unique in its delivery and message. We want more for you and more for our food industry. With only four hours to cook, the head chefs battle for respect, while SAIT Culinary students compete for the glory of being named Calgary’s ultimate Chef To Be.

Are We Doing This

CALGARY’S FOOD SCENE IS THRIVING AND WE’RE HELPING ONE SPECIAL STUDENT GET AHEAD ON THEIR PATH THROUGH CULINARY SCHOOL.

The goals of this event is to help raise awareness for both the SAIT culinary school and the local food scene in Calgary. This fundraiser is designed to be a be an annual competition with an overarching purpose to help fund and promote the SAIT culinary program and quality, local food in the city.

The money raised from the event will go directly toward SAIT to provide five vetted students with a $1,000 scholarships.

This annual fundraiser will be used to create a Chef To Be Scholarship for a qualifying SAIT Culinary Arts Program student. Educational Scholarships are an important part of a learners success. This exciting, interactive event is a great environment for all competitors to promote themselves and have the pride of being on a competitive team. The SAIT Alumni and current SAIT students gain real and practical competitive experience and are part of a winning cooking team, not to mention the fun of cooking alongside some of Albert’s best chefs!

WE BELIEVE IN CALGARY’S FOOD SCENE! THE FINE FOOD STOP HAS BEEN DELIVERING HIGH QUALITY FOOD TO LOCAL RESTAURANTS FOR OVER 2 YEARS AND WE CONTINUE TO HELP SUPPORT YOUNG CULINARY TALENT FLOURISHING IN CALGARY.

The competition is also a challenge, and a chance for SAIT Culinary students to grow their exposure to unique ingredients – sourced from both local and afar, intended to promote curiosity and intrigue in the local food system from both current and prospective students.

As a staunch supporter of the local food scene, the Fine Food Stop wants to encourage a growth, progression and expansion of the culinary abilities in our city. We see SAIT as a valuable resource of future chefs, and purveyors of quality food. We want to encourage and help grow a strong, sustainable culinary culture in Calgary.
