Appleby Horse Fair, which starts tomorrow and ends on June 12, is an annual gathering of gypsies and travellers in the town of Appleby, Westmorland. The fair sees the town's main street used for showing horses set to be traded as the animals are tethered to railings outside pubs and shops - while visitors park their caravans on both sides of the A685. Last year's event caused fury among locals, who reported shoplifting, threats and even urine being squirted through car windows by members of the travelling community. Photos from today show gypsies and travellers arriving via horse and carriage in order to set up camp in time for the start of the festival tomorrow.

Coronation Street legend Helen Worth has announced she is leaving the soap. The actress who celebrates 50 years on the ITV show next month has made the difficult decision to step down from her role as Gail Rodwell at the end of the year. Half a century after she first walked onto the cobbles, viewers will see Helen and Gail bid farewell to Weatherfield in a major storyline for the Platt family.

Amanda Knox (pictured, top and bottom) has been reconvicted of slandering a bar owner in a case related to the tragic 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher (pictured, inset-right). Knox, 36, returned to an Italian courtroom for the first time in more than twelve-and-a-half years to clear herself 'once and for all' of a slander conviction she received over an accusation she made against Patrick Lumumba (pictured, inset-left) who employed her part time. While she was reconvicted, she will not face any more jail time. 

In surveillance footage circling social media, two couples from Escazú are seen getting into a heated argument. The video from the incident that occurred on Monday shows the couples yelling across their adjoining properties at the Río Palma condominium complex, before the confrontation spills over into the front yard. One of the neighbors, Otoniel Orozco Mendoza, escalated the verbal altercation into a physical one, throwing punches at his neighbor Eduardo Ramírez Zamora. In retaliation, Zamora pulled out his gun and opened fire on Mendoza, firing at least 9 shots at point-blank range and killing him instantly.

Saga Forsgren Elneborg, 20 (left), was found strangled to death at her home in the city of Örebro in April 2023 in a case that shocked the Scandinavian country. Prosecutors claimed that her 22-year-old boyfriend Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim (right with Saga) decided to murder her rather than face the shame of telling his Muslim family that his girlfriend - believed to be half Thai, half Swedish and Christian - was expecting his baby. They alleged that on the night Ibrahim was due to tell his family about Saga's pregnancy, he went to her flat in Örebro and strangled her to death by wrapping the cord of her lamp (inset top) around her neck. The judge and jury in Örebro district court agreed and this morning announced Ibrahim would face life in prison. In case documents seen by MailOnline, Saga's mother Malisa Elneborg told investigators in a police interview that she was the one to find her daughter lying dead in her apartment (inset bottom) in the city 100 miles west of Stockholm.

Queen Camilla has shared a sweet moment with the D-Day veteran who moved her to tears with his tragic tale of how he lost his best friend on the beaches of Normandy. Tears welled up in the Queen's eyes as former Royal Navy serviceman Eric Bateman recalled his experience on Utah beach - while King Charles also appeared visibly moved. Speaking to him after the event, Camilla complimented him on how 'smart and young' he was looking, which he jokingly attributed to his wife helping him 'keep fit'. As the pair touchingly spoke about Mr Bateman's memories from that fateful day.

Weymouth in Dorset is where American forces arrived and prepared for their departure to Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The US First Infantry Division under General Omar Bradley faced some of the toughest fighting while taking the well-defended beach. Experts have identified six groups of voters among the UK's electorate - including 'Middle Britons', 'Left-Behind Patriots', and 'Well-Off Traditionalists'. Ahead of the general election on 4 July, a new analysis from the National Centre for Social Research split the voting population into half-a-dozen distinct categories. These were determined by Brits' answers to 12 key questions on a wide range of topics, including the views of those less politically engaged or less likely to vote. The groups have shared characteristics - such as social class, gender , levels of education, and geographical location - as well as aligned views on political issues such as the economy, immigration and climate change. The NatCen research was based on data from the Brititish Social Attitudes survey and is said to provide 'a more nuanced insight into the major dividing lines in British politics'. Elections expert Professor Sir John Curtice, a senior research Fellow at NatCen, said: 'Much of the commentary on the election focuses on questions of performance. 'But elections are also influenced by voters' values and their perceptions of politics and politicians. 'The electorate is not just divided between 'left' and 'right', but also between 'liberals' and 'authoritarians', while many people sit in the middle and are not especially interested in politics. 'This poses particular challenges for the two main parties who will have to reach out to voters well beyond their own 'comfort zones' to succeed.'

During the crunch ITV debate, which was watched by an average of five million viewers, the two political leaders traded blows on the economy and the NHS and frequently shouted over each other. The live debate was the first opportunity voters were given to see the Conservative and Labour leaders battle it out ahead of the July 4 election. Neither Mr Sunak nor Sir Keir appeared to land a knockout blow but a snap poll from YouGov suggested the PM performed marginally better, with 51 per cent making him the winner against 49 per cent for the Labour leader. Body language expert Judi James also believes Mr Sunak came out on top, citing his confidence and relaxed nature over Mr Starmer's nervousness.

The Foreign Secretary was putting in the hard yards in Eastleigh in Hampshire alongside local Tory candidate Paul Holmes, which is seeking to retain the seat. In a clip already viewed more than 400,000 times on TikTok Lord Cameron, the former PM, was shown rocking up to a suburban home. He then left a characteristically polite message and a leaflet when he found there was no one home. 'Hi, it's David Cameron. I was calling because of the election on July 4,' he said. 'I'm here with Paul Holmes, your local MP, who's keen to win your support on July 4 and we'll be leaving one of these in your door. Thanks very much, have a good day.' This is the shocking moment police raided an opticians as a pair of unsuspecting, balaclava-wearing men were in the middle of an alleged burglary. Footage shows two men smashing through the glass door of the Eye Studio Opticians in Chiswick, west London. They then step inside and appear to start loading items form one of the designer sunglasses displays into bags.

The winners of the 36 categories were announced by chef and broadcaster Andi Oliver in an exciting awards ceremony gathering at the Mall Galleries in London London on Tuesday.  The photography competition, hosted by Pink Lady®, celebrates the 'very best in food photography and film from around the world. 

While a Michigan couple knew the house they bought in 2020 needed some major renovation, but they didn't expect to uncover a hidden piece of history. Hayley Gilmartin and her husband, Trevor, were removing an old jacuzzi in their home in Lake Huron, the body of water separating the US and Canada , when they discovered a mysterious, water-filled chamber 20 feet below the surface. The chamber, which connects to the lake via a six-foot pipe, is believed to be a Prohibition-era tunnel, likely served as a covert route for smuggling alcohol across the border.

This is the terrifying moment a circus bear attacked its trainer in front of screaming children after he forcefully made the animal perform. The roller-skating bear, a female called Dzhema, was being forced to perform tricks at the ironically named 'Happiness Show' at Mash Circus, Obnisk, Russia , on June 1. Shocking footage captured by an audience member shows the trainer Oleg Krasov forcing Dzhema to sit in a chair with a pair of rollerskates tied to her rear paws. Under the flourescent lights, the bear can be seen slouched in the seat as hundreds of faces around the venue peer out to watch the sick act unfold. Suddenly, Krasov grabs the animal's fur with two hands and pulls her up out of the chair, forcing her to stand on her hind legs.

The incident occurred during DR Congo's friendly with Morocco on on Monday 3 June. She teamed the look with a silver bag and strappy heels. 

Mark King saw red when Robert Venus, 78, merged into his lane on the A2 and clipped his lorry's wing mirror near Gravesend in Kent. The pensioner exits his vehicle on the busy motorway to approach the lorry when its driver shoves him to the ground. Mr Venus injured his back after falling into his open car door and later had to go to hospital. King, 63, has now been fined more than £400 in court after admitting to assault.

Disturbing video captured the moment two teenagers were killed after they motorcycle crashed into a tree in the western central Colombian department of Quindio. The footage showed Katherine Cubillos, 19, riding the bike and Selena Valentina, also 19, sitting on the back while she filmed while they were traveling from the town of Pueblo Tapao to Montenegro. The two friends, who were not wearing helmets, can be seen shouting in joy and smiling at the cellphone camera.

A 5'10 heel-obsessed woman who towers over her short husband has opened up about the cruel hate they receive from strangers - revealing that her spouse is regularly mistaken for her son because of their dramatic height difference. Cassandra Gaspard, 29, and her partner, Westin, 32, who is 5'5, say they are regularly met with confused stares when they step out in the street. Some even dare to ask Cassandra why she is with Westin, while making scathing comments to her about her husband's stature.
