Catania airport located south-west of the second largest city on the Italian island of Sicily, Catania. The official name of the airport is Catania-Vincenzo Bellini Airport and it is named after a great opera composer, Vincenzo Bellini, who was born in Catania.

Catania Airport is only 6 Km away from Catania City and it is considered as the main gateway to the east coast of Sicily. The two main motorways that connect this airport to Palermo, central Sicily, and Syracuse in the south are the A19 and E45. The airport has a single double storey terminal building that handles all the domestic and international departures and arrivals.Catania Airport is the busiest airport in Sicily and is the 6th busiest in Italy with more than 6 million passengers in 2010. It ranks 3rd in terms of domestic traffic. A new terminal equipped with 22 gates and 6 loading bridges was opened in May 2008 to replace the old facilities in order to cope with the increase in passengers’ figures.

There already are plans to further enlarge the terminal as the airport continues to have rapid growth. The airport is also busy when it comes to cargo handling as it is conveniently located at the heart of the Mediterranean only a few kilometers from Catania, and it is also located near the port. Additionally, Catania Airport is built to handle large quantities of cargo traffic. The cargo infrastructure available at the airport includes a short-term storage warehouse, refrigerated storage areas, and import and export services. The airport is also certified for screening and handling dangerous goods.

To get to Catania Town via taxi it takes about 30 min without traffic and will cost about 30 euro.

In 2021, Catania Fontanarossa opened its own railway station, allowing travelers access to trains running to points on the eastern side of the island. The railway station is within a short walk of Terminal A and Terminal C. Regardless if you have a layover, holiday, or you are just passing through the island, Catania Fontanarossa Airport has everything you need to make your journey a relaxing one.

Food and Drinks are available but there is no 24-hour dining. A coffee bar is located on the first floor in departures and opens at 5:30AM. A coffee bar is also located in arrivals and is open until midnight. Travelers will find a full-service restaurant and a self-service restaurant on the first floor of departures.

Transportation

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is located just south of the Catania and Mount Etna. The airport is easy to reach by car using the E45 and A19 motorways. Travelers can reach the airport from the city by following the SS114.

Terminals

There are two terminals at Catania Fontanarossa Airport. Travelers will find Terminal A and Terminal C at the airport. Terminal A is the largest at Canatia Fontanarossa Airport and it is the most used of the two terminals. There are two floors in Terminal A with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the upper floor.

Terminal C is smaller than Terminal A. It is exclusively used by discount airline easyJet. Cantania Fontanarossa Airport is working on a third terminal, Terminal B, and it should be open in the near future.

What to expect

Catania Fontanarossa Airport has two small terminal. It only serves regional and seasonal routes to other parts of Italy. The airport’s route to Rome Fiumicino Airport is Italy’s busiest air route.

Due to the high traffic that comes through the airport, there are a variety of facilities available for travelers. Visitors will find restaurants, cafes, and shops. These locations are only open during the daytime hours and close at night. If your flight isn’t until night time, you must purchase snacks and drinks at the shops before they close.
