Menorca is far smaller and also quieter than its glamorous neighbour Mallorca, which is just a 34 km/21 mile ferry ride away. As the second largest island of the Balearics, Menorca is blessed with so many wonderful beaches that it can almost outdo Mallorca and Ibiza's combined number of sandy seafronts. The island's 80,000 permanent inhabitants welcome thousands of families to the southern part of the island, who appreciate the calm, quiet atmosphere and the old-world charm of the island. Fortunately, the destination has been able to avoid the relentless development seen in other parts of Spain and the island has largely remained unspoiled.

The main cities and towns on the island are its capital Mahon, a city with approximately 20,000 permanent residents and a huge natural harbour that is its star attraction, as well as the towns Sant Luis and Ciutadella, a historic settlement that still shows many traces of Spain's Moorish occupation. The entire city has been declared a National Monument by the Spanish government and visitors enjoy the stark contrast between the Moorish layout of the maze of streets and the baroque splendor of the city's churches.

Sant Luis is French in origin and dates back to the 18th century. Here visitors will find some of Menorca's loveliest beaches: Cala d'es Rafalet, Punta Prima and Cala Alcaufar.
