Myanmar
Extreme heat across Myanmar has been affecting IDPs, especially in Magway and Sagaing regions, which host around 1.45 million displaced people. While fleeing from the armed conflict between the military junta and armed resistance groups, many have taken refuge in forests and mountains and are residing in makeshift shelters that provide inadequate protection from the heat. Some IDPs have died from heatstroke. Heat-related complications are especially affecting the elderly, children, and people with underlying health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. IDPs also face a lack of access to healthcare facilities and medicines. Potable water shortages have been reported, especially in Sagaing region. The use of contaminated water has increased the risk of contracting waterborne illnesses, such as diarrhoea, viral hepatitis, and typhoid. Seasonal forecasts indicate a high probability of above-average temperatures in the entire country in the next three months. Lebanon
At least 1.5 million Syrians live in Lebanon, including 815,000 who are registered with UNHCR. They have needs across all sectors but mostly food, protection, education, and livelihoods. A rise in violence against Syrian refugees was reported following the death of an official from the Lebanese Forces party on 8 April, which was attributed to a group of Syrian refugees. There has been a rise in informal checkpoints, curfews, acts of violence in the street, and threats of mass evictions in some neighbourhoods. Arbitrary detention and deportation are already a protection concern for Syrians. In 2023, at least 500 refugees were returned to Syria. The impact of the economic crisis and the war between Hezbollah and Israel on the living conditions of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon is increasing needs among the refugees in Lebanon. Mali
On 16 April, about 110 civilians were kidnapped by members of the Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (Support Group for Islam and Muslims) between Bandiagara and Bankass in the region of Mopti, central Mali. Protection incidents are increasing throughout the country, with more civilians being targeted. A 500% increase in the number of incidents was reported in January 2024 compared to January 2023. Protection is one of the main areas of concern, with about 1.6 million people in need of assistance in Mali. Mopti is among the regions where the severity of needs is highest.
