The Angels announced on Wednesday that right-hander Robert Stephenson will miss the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury.

Well, that was unexpected. Stephenson had been rehabbing a shoulder injury but was pulled from his latest outing on Saturday after facing just one hitter. The Angels will have another announcement on Thursday where they’ll provide further detail and a potential timeline for Stephenson’s return. Incumbent closer Carlos Estevez’s job security looks a bit stronger based on this development.
Mike Trout

LAA Center Fielder #27

Mike Trout went 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk in a 5-4 win over the Rays on Wednesday.

Trout is sure starting the season like a superstar with something to prove. He blasted his eighth homer of the season on Wednesday with a solo shot off Zack Littell in the first inning and later drew a walk. The 32-year-old slugger is now slashing .282/.363/.690 with the eight homers, 12 runs scored, 11 RBI, and three steals across 80 plate appearances.
Amed Rosario

TB Shortstop #10

Amed Rosario went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Wednesday against the Angels.

Rosario knocked a base hit in the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly. He later came up in a big spot in the eighth with a runner on and gave the Rays the lead with a two-run blast off Hunter Strickland. The versatile 28-year-old making plenty of loud contact in the early going, slashing .328/.339/.500 with two homers, nine RBI, and a steal across 59 plate appearances.

TB Relief Pitcher #29

Pete Fairbanks allowed two runs in the ninth inning to blow the save and take the loss against the Angels on Wednesday.

Fairbanks was summoned in the ninth with a one-run lead to close it out. He allowed two runs to score on three base hits and two walks before getting out of the inning. The Angels would secure the win in the bottom of the frame, charging Fairbanks with his second loss of the season. The 30-year-old right-hander had converted all three of his previous save chances. He’ll have some work to do to lower his 9.00 ERA over seven innings of work.
Reid Detmers

LAA Starting Pitcher #48

Reid Detmers allowed two runs -- one earned -- with four strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Rays on Wednesday.

After a clean first inning, two base hits and a sacrifice fly brought an unearned run in to score for the Rays in the second. Detmers would hold Tampa Bay off the board until the sixth. Three consecutive singles brought a run in and end Detmers day with one out at 90 pitches. He struck out four and scattered seven hits with one walk. The 24-year-old left-hander has been outstanding to start the season, posting a 1.19 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 30/7 K/BB ratio across 22 2/3 innings.
Zack Littell

TB Relief Pitcher #52

Zack Littell allowed three runs with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Wednesday.

Littell served up a solo homer to Mike Trout in the first inning to put the Angels on the board. He tossed three more scoreless frames before a pair of base hits brought a second run in. Two more hits in the sixth inning would make it three before Littell’s day was done. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out seven. He’ll take a 2.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and a 22/5 K/BB ratio across 21 innings into a home start against the Tigers next week.
Cooper Criswell

BOS Starting Pitcher #64

Red Sox’ manager Alex Cora confirmed Wednesday that Cooper Criswell will work bulk innings on Thursday against the Guardians.

Brennan Bernardino will function as an opener in front of him. Criswell pitched well in his last outing against the Angels on Saturday, allowing two runs over four innings in a no-decision. He’s probably best avoided for fantasy purposes.
Connor Wong

BOS Catcher #12

Connor Wong went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to lead the Red Sox to a 2-0 win over the Guardians on Wednesday.

Wong had the team’s only RBI in the low-scoring affair. After a run scored on a balk in the third inning, he took Ben Lively deep for a solo homer in the fourth to extend the Boston lead. It was the third home run of the season for Wong and third consecutive multi-hit game. The 27-year-old backstop is slashing .382/.371/.676 across 35 plate appearances. After starting the season on the short-side of a platoon, it seems his bat has earned him more playing time against right-handed pitching.
Tanner Houck

BOS Starting Pitcher #89

Tanner Houck struck out nine batters over nine scoreless innings in a complete game shutout win over the Guardians.

Houck was incredible Wednesday against the Guardians. He faced just two batters over the minimum, scattering three base hits with no walks. Houck had his slider working, generating 11 whiffs on the pitch and 19 total to strike out nine batters. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to build on the dominant performance when he takes a 1.35 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and a 28/2 K/BB ratio across 26 2/3 innings into a rematch against the Guardians in Cleveland next week.
Forrest Whitley

HOU Relief Pitcher #60

Astros optioned RHP Forrest Whitley to Triple-A Sugar Land.

The 26-year-old hurler was recalled on Tuesday to provide some extra depth in the Astros’ bullpen, but he’ll be sent back out with Justin Verlander set to be activated from the injured list on Friday. Whitley will continue to bide his time at Triple-A until he’s needed once more.
