Calling Radar - IFR Communications

NOTE: The "father" of the textbook calling Radar and the CD-ROM ATC Clearances, my friend Silvio Giannini, regrettably deceased in 2016. To fulfill his desire, the commercial copyrights and the intellectual property rights have been transferred to René Fankhauser/AviationVoice.

The textbook calling radar includes the most up-to-date phraseology procedures for IFR communications described in ICAO documents. Most of the training facilities in Switzerland use this book for their ground school training and refresher courses.

The need for clear and unambiguous communication (Radiotelephony/RTF) between pilots and ATC is vital in assisting the safe and expeditious operation of aircraft. ICAO phraseologies are developed to provide efficient, clear, concise, and unambiguous communications, and constant attention should be given to the correct use of ICAO phraseologies in all instances in which they are applicable. However, it is not possible to provide standard phraseology to cover every conceivable situation which may arise, and the examples contained in this manual are not exhaustive, but merely representative of radiotelephony phraseology in common use. If situation requires RTF users shall use supplement phraseologies with the use of “plain” language following the principle of keeping phrases clear and concise.

Calling Radar cites all phraseology procedures listed in the EASA Part-FCL.615 learning objectives for IFR communications (subject 092) and described in the ICAO documents (Annex 10 Vol. 2, Doc 4444, Doc 9432). VFR communication is not a topic in this book as it is a prerequisite for IFR communication. Nevertheless, students will be examined in these topics too.

Even though at most aerodromes the initial part of an ATC route clearance is published as Standard Instrument Departures (SID) there still are airports using "open clearances", containing a detailed description of the route and levels to be flown within the terminal area. ATC route clearances shall always be read back and therefore oral practice is needed. Symbols and abbreviations may be used as a shorthand method to write the clearance down. ANNEX C of the textbook provides some information and exercises to practise this task and on top of that there is a USB-Drive ATC CLEARANCES available.
